Service Learning Projects 2007/2008
Sporting Service-Learners: A big thank you to Liverpool Hope Rotaract students and PE subject leaders for their part in generating a sporting social enterprise in
partnership with Merseyside Police and community volunteers.

Well done to Julie Mc Clelland, C Edwards, E Lewis, E Cahill, M Coventry, A Joynes, R Lear, S Openshaw, G Newell and L Le Miere who secured their CSLA community volunteering through the project with PC D Sim. An off-the- wall sports evening raise some £200 for charity to be split between Alder Hey, Cancer Research and Claire House.

Rotary battles Gun Crime: St Margarets CE and Service-Learning focussed Rotaract students have been working on a gun crime musical over the last few terms following B. Bygroves LFC ' Shoot Goals Not Guns' theme. Their work is coming to completion and will be available as a resource to all primary schools in the New Year. Thanks goes to Rt. J Earp and the enthusiasm of St. Margarets' students and staff (G. Laird and H. Kinlock).

The Liverpool Lighthouse www.liverpoollighthouse.com has offered volunteer placements across their diverse activities in Anfield. The Lighthouse and their renowned Gospel Choir have partnered a significant number of our dance and music focused Service Learning activities for some ten years. The ‘SIGNAL 2’ celebration event, a partnership project between Liverpool Hope University, Merseyside Police, Liverpool Football Club and Rotary was hosted in their new auditorium in 2005, receiving a special message from Sir Cliff Richard. For more information on SIGNAL go to the archive area of the site HERE.

Off-shoots of the musical SIGNAL projects include the ‘Song In A Day’ workshops and Airborne.

Small Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s) ‘pump primed’ by the SIGNAL process. Go to the archive ‘workshops’ area of the site to investigate

Music certainly generates creativity, and can act as a common voice. Its worth checking out the Professional User Review of the British Educational Research Association ‘How is Music Learning Celebrated And Developed?’ www.bera.org if you find this strand of ‘Excellence and Enjoyment’ interesting.

Small change, Big Difference

What do you do with the spare change, the ‘slummy’ (Liverpool slang) in your pocket at the end of the night? Have you ever read the story of the ‘widow’s might?’ (scripture ref). This year the new Rotaract Club of Liverpool Hope University are aiming at collecting this loose change from students living in the Halls of Residence. Our aim is to support the Vineyard Academy Complex in Tamale Ghana, where Emmanuel Kussi has a vision to support the children and parents in his area.

Funds raised in social enterprise and entrepreneurial learning focused SIGNAL projects have assisted Emmanuel in expanding the school. We now seek to help him develop his agricultural training project (picture of roof being built , picture of those gave to Paul, picture of holding up cards saying thanks Hope University) if you are interested in how SIGNAL developed the enterprise strand of Service Learning click HERE. You may also wish to support the Vineyard with a ‘shoebox appeal’, email for details (patterj@hope.ac.uk)

Following the ‘March of Reconciliation’ in Liverpool (see pics below) lead by Eric Lynch ( liverpoolhistoryslaverytours.com) our aim is to work in small ways and big ways to support educational projects at home and overseas.

Bee Survey

If we consider the old saying ‘many hands make light work’ Hope Rotaract members on Teacher Training Degree Pathways (QTS) may find this project interesting. Take a look at www.bumblebeeconservationtrust.co.uk, apparently many bee species are under threat.

As students must complete their school based learning across Merseyside; being present in most schools, it would be a wonderful exercise to complete a survey where you are teaching. Perhaps this could be an annual event, and an exciting longitudinal study. Who amongst us has the will to undertake an ‘excellence and enjoyment’ focused project in their school with cross-curricular links? Perhaps an after school club where mobile phones with camera action are used? Perhaps digital cameras engaging ICT could be used and a display generated? Is anyone studying ‘mini beasts’ on their practice? Get creative and run a pilot ... think of all the wonderful literacy and numeracy lessons you could develop for your classes within this project (and share).

Is it possible to cover all Merseyside during the Capital of Culture year and engage all QTS students? If you are a nature lover and want to be involved in environmental issues, start here and volunteer! Take a look at some of the worksheets developed on other environmental projects in the archive area of the site. CLICK HERE

Shoebox Appeal

Last year we completed an educational shoebox appeal helping to equip the Vineyard Academy Complex with resources (see picture given to Paul) are you willing to run such a project during teaching practice?

Thanks must go to malogistics for helping us to get all last years shoeboxes to Ghana. If you are willing and able email for a project pack (patterj@hope.ac.uk)

St. Philips Garden
St. Philips have developed their school grounds to create different natural environments. A website is to be created to show the making and developments of the garden.
Merrie Glove
A trial is to be conducted, to research the use of the Merrie Glove, which aids children with Dyslexia with mathematics work.

Streets of Culture

A development of the SIGNAL process ‘engage, educate and celebrate’ was the wonderful Streets of Culture project. Students at St.Margaret’s High School in Aigburth, Liverpool designed a computer game from scratch within a social enterprise initiative. In selling their completed game, proceeds were donated to charity.

Take a look at a sample of the game on www.streetsofculture.com, are you interested in the ICT element of this project? Would you like to generate some worksheets or online learning resources for this game? Online learning has a clear Governmental focus, get yourself involved in its development now alongside a developing SME.

SIGNAL

This year Rotary Clubs in District 1180 are kindly funding the fourth major SIGNAL project. A continued partnership project between Liverpool Hope, Merseyside Police and Liverpool Football Club will see Liverpool Hope Service-Learning volunteers from the new Rotaract Club (Liverpool Hope Exchange) develop a ‘SHOOT GOALS NOT GUNS’ musical. This comes behind and in support of the existing LFC ‘Truth for Youth’ programme run by the amazing Bill Bygroves and LFC’s community officers.

SIGNAL is the process of Service Learning undertaken by Liverpool Hope Rotaract members … learn more in the Service-Learning area of the site.
