Signal Celebrations 2005 (Engage, Educate, Celebrate)

The Schools Inter-Generational Nurturing and Learning (SIGNAL) Project was celebrated last week at Liverpool Lighthouse. The SIGNAL process, devised by John Patterson of the Education Deanery, has seen children engaged through citizenship and educated through entrepreneurial learning and 'Excellence and Enjoyment'. The children's work being Celebrated through a social enterprise.

Eight partner schools; St Vincent de Paul RC, Pitt Street, St Cecelia's RC , Knotty Ash, Bishop Martin CE, St Andrew's CE, New Park, St Vincent's School for the Blind and Partially Sighted and Gwladys Street, received a citizenship 'Truth for Youth' assembly by Bill Bygroves of Liverpool Football Club. Student teachers volunteered their time to deliver National Curriculum lessons supporting the Truth for Youth assembly messages: Give racism the red card, kick drugs into touch, more important than being a good footballer is being a good person, you will never walk alone, be a culture vulture ,we is better than me and fire your dreams.

Merseyside Police and Rotary members assisted in making community newspapers and to write songs around the citizenship messages. The children performed their songs at the celebration event laying down their tracks for a music CD, supported by Sir Cliff Richard. The CD will be on sale from the 1st April with all proceeds going to four named local and international charities including our own Hope One World.

The event was filmed and will be screened by BBC Radio Merseyside on the 'big screen' in Clayton Square followed by Birmingham, Hull and Manchester screens.

John himself would like to say a big thank you to all the partners involved; Partner schools, Merseyside Police, Hope Students, Liverpool Football Club, Liverpool Exchange Rotarians and Rotary International. For further information, please contact John Patterson on: patterj@hope.ac.uk

A MESSAGE FROM SIR CLIFF RICHARD: "It's great to hear that so many of you have taken part in the SIGNAL Project, and that through music you've been learning how to treat one another and how to live your lives in a really healthy way. "Remember that, just through the choices you make, it's possible to make a positive difference - not only to your own life but to the life of your community as well. Please choose wisely!"

The day had added value with the appearance of Tommy Scott, the lead singer of ‘Space’. (www.spacefans.org.uk) who took time out from recording to help the project - and play a game of football with the pupils and community trainer Alan Johnson of Everton football Club.

We wish to express a big thank you to everyone who made the day such a success.
